Lower Austria is the largest state in Austria. It is surrounded by the Czech Republic in the north, Slovakia in the east, Burgenland in the southeast, Styria in the south and Upper Austria in the west. The state of Vienna is completely surrounded by the state of Lower Austria. The capital of the state has been Sankt Pölten since 1986. The highest point of the state, which has a total surface area of 19 174 km² and covers a total of 21 regions, is Schneeberg 2076 meters, and the lowest point is the Berg region.
The population distribution of Lower Austria is different. The busiest area is around Vienna. The eastern border of the Alps is the second region where the population is concentrated. In this region are the settlements of Vienna, Mödling, Baden, Bad Vöslau and Wiener Neustadt. In addition to the capital Sankt Pölten, Krems, Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Wiener Neustadt are the state's largest cities. The total population of the province is approximately 1.55 million.
