What to Know About Tirol

Tyrol is a state in western Austria. The state capital, Innsbruck, hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics.

Tyrol is a multinational historical region located in the heart of the Alps. It consists of North, East and South Tyrol. North and East Tyrol are located in Austria and together form the Austrian federal state Tyrol, with its capital at Innsbruck.

South Tyrol, despite the German-speaking majority, has been part of Italy since the end of World War I. With its capital in Bolzanoor Bozen, the mountain forms the northern part of the Italian autonomous province Trentino-Alto Adige.

Like its sister provinces of Bavaria in Germany and Salzburgerland in Austria, Tyrol is the definition of the Germanic Alps stereotype. Filled with romantic lakes and castles and beer-drinking locals dressed in lederhosen playing oom-pa-pa music and marching in bands, this place can at times seem a bit like a fairy tale to the visitor. Innsbruck and Bolzano/Bozen are the only true "bigger" cities, the rest with a beautiful natural panorama. In summer and winter, the roads are flooded with tourists. South Tyrol sits on the sunny side of the Alps and is an interesting mix of three cultures.
