What to Know About Wiener Neustadt
Wiener Neustadt is a city and district center with 37,600 inhabitants south of Vienna in Lower Austria. The city is an important intersection and industrial center. There are commercial and military academies in the city. Textile and metal industry are the most important industrial sectors of the city.
The city, which was a fortress founded in 1194 for the purpose of defense against the Hungarians, gained market status in 1210 and gained urban privileges in 1277. The city, which served as the imperial center between 1452-1493, became a bishopric center between 1469-1784.
The city gained its current name in the 17th century. The city center is characterized by houses with gardens located around the main square with a column built in memory of St. Mary, and a 16th-century town council building with a classical façade. The central church, which was built in 1279, the old monastery that was changed in the 18th century, the castle, which was built in 1378 and in which a military academy was built in 1752, are the other structures worth seeing in the city.
