Styria is a federal state in the southeastern and central part of Austria. Its capital is Graz, with a population of 1,210,700 and an area of 16,392 km².
The mountainous state of Styria spans around the Niedere Tauern mountain range, which forms an important water division line. Upper Styria stretches from the Limestone Alps in the north to the eastern range of the Central Alps and includes the river valleys of Mur, Mürz, Salza and Upper Enns. Lower Styria encompasses the central part of the Mur Valley and the Cor Alps exceeding 2,000 m in the west, the Pack Alps and the hilly region in the east.
The state's economy has long been based on mining. It has been mined since Celtic times in the Erzberg region near Eisenerz, which provides the vast majority of Austria's iron ore. Lignite is mined in Fohnsdorf and Köflach, magnesite is mined in the Shale Alps, and graphite, talc, gypsum and salt are mined in other parts of the state.
