What to Know About Graz

It is the capital of the Austrian state of Styria. It is located in the southeast of the country. It is the second largest city after Vienna. The city, which is divided into two by the Mur River, is famous for the structures built by Italian architects during the Renaissance Period and for its "Carved Hill" to protect it from wars.

Graz was the capital of the Habsburg Monarchy from 1379 to 1619. The city was besieged by the Hungarians in 1481 and by the Ottomans in 1529 and 1532. Despite its historical texture and origin, it is one of the industrial centers of the country. Iron, metal, leather, paper, glass, shoes, beer and textile industries are developed.

It is among the cities with the highest education level and student population in Austria. There are six universities and approximately 45 thousand students in the country. The world-famous explorer Nicola Tesla was educated at a polytechnic school in Graz. Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the celebrities of the show business, was also born in this city. There are 15 bridges on the Mur River, which divides the city into two.

The river adds a unique movement to the city, which has a calm and serene appearance in general, with its high flow. Due to the insufficient depth, transportation on the river is not possible. However, rafting or surfing on the river is possible. The best preserved city center in Europe is in this city.
