What to Know About Düzce

The history of Düzce province dates back to the 14th century. However, in the town of Konuralp in Düzce, findings belonging to the 3rd century BC were found. According to the information obtained from the archaeological artifacts, it has been determined that the region has a very rich history.

The Bithynia State dominated the region for a long time and established important cities in the region. Later, Pontus domination continued for a short time, but the Romans besieged and captured the city. The Romans changed the name of the city to "Prusias ad Hypium". Christianity was the prevalent religion in the region, which was under Roman rule for a long time. With the division of Rome into two, the lands of the region belonged to the Eastern Rome. The Ottomans captured the region in 1323 and Turkified the region.

In the 16th century, the people of the region called it 'Market' and the village in the middle of the plain was called 'Düzce Pazarı'. During the Ottoman period, the region was used and developed to meet the timber needs. In the following periods, immigration to the region increased and its population increased.

Thanks to its commercial importance, it attracted the attention of Greeks and Armenians and settlement in the region accelerated. With the government order in 1915, the Armenian population in Düzce was deported. It was captured by the French in 1918. The province, which was recaptured with the National Struggle, continued to develop rapidly and became an important industrial and commercial city. After the 17 August earthquake, the region, which suffered major injuries, became the 81st province of Turkey in order to heal its wounds faster.
