What to Know About Trabzon

The city of Trabzon was founded by the Greeks in the Ancient Greek period, probably around 700 BC. Its first Greek name was Trapezus, from which its current name derives. The name of Trabzon has a history of at least 2700 years. Before the Greeks, civilizations with different cultures such as Makrons, Skitens, Kolkler, Driller dominated the region.

B.C. Zenofon, a student of Socrates in 400 years, visited Trabzon and wrote information about the people there in his diary. Very little information about this culture has survived to the present day. After Trabzon was founded, it was surrounded by Persians and Romans for a while. Societies that became a mixture of Persian and Greek culture lived in this region and the region was called Pontus lands.

Wars and occupations continued during the Byzantine period. The Greek Empire of Trabzon separated from Byzantium and had an autonomous structure. The Greek population was dominant in Trabzon and due to strategic interests, they often cooperated with Georgians and Turkmens. Emperor Komnenos married his daughters and sisters to the leaders of the Akkoyunlu State and took a strategic advantage from this business.

Those who think that Trabzon is a Laz city are in error. The region has been dominated by the Greeks since the earliest times, and the Laz later migrated from Artvin and Rize. Fatih Sultan Mehmet annexed Trabzon to the Ottoman lands in 1461 and drove one-third of the Greek population there. Since then, Trabzon has been in the hands of the Turkish people.
