What to Know About Karabük

There are many mounds belonging to the period of unwritten history in the Karabük region. However, since there is no professional archaeological excavation, there are not enough documents and artifacts to illuminate this history. According to the surveys, the oldest evidence is found in Yazıboy village in Eskipazar district.

It is known that the region was used as a settlement approximately 4500 years ago in the Bronze Age. It is thought that the history of the region will go back to ancient times if deeper and more detailed researches are carried out.

Karabük has hosted many civilizations. Hittites, Romans, Hellenistic Kings and Phrygians settled in the region on a large scale. The place settled during the Hittite period was the town of Eflani. The city was called Haluna in this era. In the Hittite language, this word means wool.

Hellenistic Kingdoms used this region as a buffer zone to protect the region from Roman occupation and made its defense here. In the first century BC, the Roman Empire used the region for its own purposes and benefited from it. Many Roman settlements can be found in Karabük. Some of these ruins are Kimistine and Hadrianapolis.

Some of the Turkish tribes, who were allied with Byzantium before the Battle of Manzikert, lived in this region. These tribes are Kipchak and Pechenek. The tribes that fought with the Turks along with Byzantium later changed sides and joined the Seljuks. Fatih Sultan Mehmet Khan conquered the region in the 15th century and drove the Genoese here. Karabük became a province on 6 June 1995.
