What to Know About Artvin

Copper and bronze remains were found in the city, which is known to have been settled by Georgians in 3000 BC for the first time. In 2000 BC, the Hurrians took possession of the region by pressure. With the collapse of the Hittite Civilization, various civilizations dominated this region for a long time. The lands of Artvin province joined the Byzantine lands in 415 AD.

After the Georgians, Muslim Arabs and Seljuks, this historical city again came under the rule of various civilizations. Finally, in 1551, the city definitively came under the rule of the Ottomans. The city, which was in the hands of the Russians from 1876 until the War of Independence, was brought back to our country with the successful struggle of the national forces under the command of Kazım Karabekir.

Artvin became a province in 1924 when it was a starboard. However, in 1933, it was connected to Rize as a district. In 1956, it was assigned the status of an independent province by the government.

The forests, which are located in a very large area, are generally made up of conifers. The beech tree stands out as the other dominant type of plant. Due to the scarcity of arable land, forests in the province are generally destroyed to a great extent. Most of the forests with coniferous and broad-leaved trees are classified as coppice, normal coppice, and a small number of degraded coppice.

There are animals to be hunted such as rabbit, wild goat, roe deer, pig, wolf, jackal, fox, bear, otter, marten and badger in the forests of Artvin province. In addition, birds such as woodcock, wild duck, turtledove, partridge, wild cock, blackbird, juniper, and fish such as trout, carp, and mustache are widely available in the lakes.
