Kocaeli, which was determined to have a settled life dating back to 3000 BC, serves as a crossroads on the road where our country and other countries provide world trade. The deep-rooted settled life in the history of Kocaeli, which emerged as a result of the researches, first started with the Phrygians, and then they settled in a place known as Başiskele today by a group of immigrants from Greece.
Alexander the Great was the person who actually built the city in 262 BC. In the period of Orhan Gazi, with Orhan Gazi, who took Adapazarı and its surroundings, our city of Kocaeli came under the rule of the Ottomans. Before the War of Independence, the Greeks and the British dominated again, but the city was conquered in 1921 with the War of Independence. The fact that it was developed and became a successful province today was achieved with the support and large venture investments made in the Republican period.
Kocaeli is a city that can experience two different climate types in terms of both coastline and mountainous area. At the same time, as you go down to the lower parts of the city, the climate of the city shifts towards the Mediterranean climate, leaving the Black Sea effect. There is a dense rain forest between the Samanlı Mountains and the coastline of the city, which has especially high mountains.
This forest, on the other hand, consists of oak, beech and chestnut tree species, but in the highest parts of the mountain, evergreen pine species, which are more durable in harsh weather conditions or hot weather conditions, are seen. In the southern parts, especially in the region where the Gulf of Izmit is located, the Mediterranean climate is dominant to a great extent. While the duration of snow on the ground in the city lasts for twelve days, the average temperature varies between -8 degrees and 44 degrees depending on the region.
