Wiener Neustadt is a city and district center with 37,600 inhabitants south of Vienna in Lower Austria. The city is an important intersection and industrial center. There are commercial and military academies in the city. Textile and metal industry are the most important industrial sectors of the city.
The city, which was a fortress founded in 1194 for the purpose of defense against the Hungarians, gained market status in 1210 and gained urban privileges in 1277. The city, which served as the imperial center between 1452-1493, became a bishopric center between 1469-1784.
The city gained its current name in the 17th century.
