The city, which has many ancient cities, draws attention with its prehistoric location. The city, which was thought to have been under water during the Ice Age, survived the flood and continued its existence. It was invaded by Roman and Byzantine many times and joined the Ottoman lands by Murat I in 1363. Later, during the First World War and the Balkan Wars, it was also invaded by the Greeks and Bulgarians.
