What to Know About Çankırı

Located in the Central Anatolia region, Çankırı was founded on the site of Gangra, one of the old cities. During the Roman Empire, it was used as a place of exile.

Çankırı and its surroundings were captured by the Danishmends after the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. After the Danishmends, the region passed into the hands of the Seljuks. During the reign of Murat I, it joined the Ottoman lands. Çankırı, which was the center of a Livan affiliated to Anatolia in terms of administration during the Ottoman period, was the center of a sanjak affiliated to Kastamonu before the proclamation of the republic.

Çankırı has a great importance due to its location during the War of Independence. During the War of Independence, material and people were transported from Istanbul to Ankara via İnebolu, and Çankırı became an important intermediary center. After the proclamation of the republic, it became a province.

Central Anatolian climate is dominant in Çankırı. Winters are harsh and cold, and summers are hot and dry. Snowfall is common in winter. The southern part of Çankırı, which is quite flat, is bare in terms of vegetation. The mountains in the northern part are covered with trees, and the valleys are covered with poplar and willow trees.
