As important caravan routes connecting Anatolia and Mesopotamia passed, it became a settlement over time. In this way, it has hosted many cultures. It is seen that Muslim, Armenian, Greek and Syriac peoples lived together in this region for many years and the remains of their civilizations. The name of the province was changed to El-Azik, which means Azık, with a proposal made by Atatürk during his visit to the city in 1937, and in time it was named Elazığ due to its ease and ease of pronunciation in Turkish.
