Dedza, 80km southeast of Lilongwe, is an interesting town for a variety of reasons. At 1600m (5300ft) it is actually the tallest city in Malawi. It has a beautiful forest and plateau view with the Dedza Mountain covered with trees rising just behind the city.
A charming forestry town, the region has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and old and new artistic traditions are still found. Dedza Pottery masters can be viewed in workshops and factory, producing a variety of items from mug and food service to table lamps and tiles. Many are decorated with brightly colored designs or local scenes and are all sold in the factory shop. Dedza Pottery products are found throughout Malawi and sold for export. Pottery is a popular stop between Lilongwe and Blantyre, with a charming tea shop selling delicious cakes. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, nearby Chongoni Rock Art showcases art from much older times from the early Stone Age.
