Nkhotakota is located in the Central region, one of the three regions of the country, and is one of the counties on the coast of Lake Malawi. The central city of the county is the city of Nkhotakota, which has the same name as the general of the county. Lake Malawi is located in the east of the district, Mzimba district and Nkhata Bay in the north, Kasunga district and Ntchisi district in the west and Salima district in the south.
