The Central Region is one of the three existing regions of the African country Malawi. It has a population of 5,491,034 (2008) and an area of 35,592 square kilometers. The capital of the region is Lilongwe, which is also the capital of the country.
The central region is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Mozambique to the south, Lake Malawi to the east, the northern region to the north and the southern region of Malawi to the southeast. While the central region is the largest region of the country in terms of surface area, it is the second largest region of the country in terms of population. The region is adjacent to Zambia and Mozambique in the west, the Northern Region in the north, Lake Malawi in the east, and Mozambique and the Southern Region in the south.
The administrative capital of the region is Lilongwe, which is also the capital of the entire country.
