Wels is an important city in Austria, located in the northern part of the country. Wales is the second largest and most important urban settlement in the province of Upper Austria, where it forms a separate urban district. Wales is located in the northern part of Austria. The state capital, Vienna, is about 230 km east of the city, and the provincial one, Linz, is about 30 km east.
Already in the Neolithic, the first settlements appeared on the site of today's Wales. In Roman times, the city of Ovilava was built here, one of the most important in the Roman province of Noricum. With the collapse of the Roman Empire, the city died out, so in the Middle Ages, the newly formed Germanic place did not play a significant role. However, in 1222, the settlement received city rights, but in the following centuries, the city of Wales had little significance.
During the Second World War, the city was known for the neighboring concentration camp Mauthausen. After the war, Wales developed very quickly and crossed the border of 50,000 inhabitants.
