It has existed since January 1, 1982. Before that, the municipalities had been assigned to the Klagenfurt-Land district from 1850, from October 1, 1903 until the formation of an independent district, Feldkirchen was a political branch, which assigned a large part of all competencies for direct execution got, but was bound by instructions to the Klagenfurt district captain.
The district is located in the Gurktal Alps in northern Carinthia, where it borders on the federal state of Styria.
