What to Know About Rust
Rust is located in the Austrian state of Burgenland. It is a city on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, close to the Hungarian border. With a population of only about 1,900, it is the smallest legal city in the country, as it was granted royal independent city rights by the Hungarian crown in 1681. In Statutarstadt, it also creates an administrative district of its own. The city is famous for its wines, especially Beerenauslese, ice wine, Ruster Ausbruch.
The settlement was first mentioned as Ceel in a 1317 deed issued by King Charles I of Hungary, the name derived from szil for Hungarian Elm, later translated into German Rüster or Rusten. The present-day Hungarian name Ruszt is again a translation from the German term. The citizens of Rust gained market rights in 1470 and the privilege of marking the corks of wine barrels with the famous 'R' brand in 1524. The wealthy town finally gained its independence in 1681 at the diet of Sopron, by order of Emperor Leopold I. Hungary.
