The area of the district is 1038.7 km², with a population of 51,730 (2001) and a population density of 49.8 inhabitants / km². The administrative center of the district is Neusiedl am See.

The District of Neusiedl am See is the easternmost district of Austria, on the border with Hungary and Slovakia, and the northernmost district of Burgenland. It comprises a large part of Lake Neusiedl and the Austrian part of the Lake Neusiedl-Seewinkel national park. The Leitha River, a tributary of the Danube, runs through the district and makes up part of its northern boundary.

The district has a north-south distance of approximately 50 km. It reaches from the Slovak border in the north to the Seewinkel in the south. From east to west it stretches for about 33 km, from the Leitha Mountains on the Parndorf plain to the Hungarian border.
