What to Know About Bergara

Key Facts

Bergara is a municipality located in the Alto Deva comarca of the province of Guipúzcoa, within the autonomous community of the Basque Country (País Vasco), Spain. Situated in the interior of the province, it lies approximately 40 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital, San Sebastián, and about 60 kilometers east of Bilbao. The municipality is nestled in the valley of the Deba River, which flows through the town, and is surrounded by the scenic hills and mountains characteristic of the Basque interior. Bergara covers an area of approximately 75.97 square kilometers and, as of recent estimates, has a population of around 14,500 inhabitants. Historically, Bergara is renowned for its significant role during the Enlightenment in Spain, notably as the site where the Basque Society of Friends of the Country (Real Sociedad Bascongada de Amigos del País) was founded in the 18th century, and for the Bergara Agreement (Convenio de Bergara) in 1839, which ended the First Carlist War. The town's economy has traditionally been based on industry, particularly metalworking and manufacturing, alongside services. Administratively, as a municipality, it is the fundamental local entity, but it does not contain further official sub-regions within it for postal code purposes; however, for detailed postal code lookup, one would refer to the various neighborhoods and streets within the municipality of Bergara itself.
