About New Zealand

New Zealand Postal Codes

If you are filling out a New Zealand address, use the 4-digit postcode that matches the exact suburb or delivery area. Do not add a fifth digit, and do not use one general code for the whole city. Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and other cities can have many different postcodes inside the same city name.

A realistic central Auckland address would look like this: 23 Queen Street, Auckland Central, Auckland 1010, New Zealand. For central Auckland, 1010 is commonly used, but it is not a safe code for all of Auckland. Ponsonby, Newmarket, Mount Eden, Albany, Manukau, and outer suburbs can all use different codes, even though “Auckland” still appears in the address.

A soft way to read New Zealand codes is this: 1xxx often points around Auckland, 2xxx to parts of the upper North Island, 3xxx and 4xxx to other North Island regions, 5xxx to Wellington and nearby areas, and 7xxx to 9xxx mostly to South Island areas. That is useful for spotting a bad-looking code, but it is practical guidance, not an official street-by-street rule.

NZ Post’s postcode finder is the source to use when the exact address matters, and UPU-style addressing guidance for New Zealand also shows the postcode written after the town or city line as part of the delivery address. The postcode is tied to delivery areas, so the suburb line is not just decoration.

So if a form only says “Auckland,” do not automatically type 1010 unless the address is really in the central city area. Use the suburb first, then the street. For rural addresses, check the postcode carefully and keep the RD number or locality details visible.
