Nkhata Bay is a city in the state of Malawi, located on the African continent. The city is a settlement located in the Northern Territory in the northern part of the country. According to 2013 estimated population data, 12,219 people live in the city. According to the official census results conducted in 2008, 11,260 people were living. Nkhata Bay is located at the northernmost point of Lake Malawi, which David Livingstone reached during his expeditions through Africa 150 years ago. Its small, sheltered harbor is the focus of the Lake's fishing industry, but it is also becoming increasingly important as a tourist destination. As a vibrant port city in the north of Malawi, it is often referred to as the gateway to the islands. It has a great craft market and a lively atmosphere to the city. Despite its size, Nkhata Bay offers a lot, with numerous small shops and a bank / ATM, as well as internet cafes, restaurants and bars, and a well-known and established diving school. Just a 3-minute drive from the city center is Chikale, a beautiful sandy beach with a selection of simple lodges.
